GSRG Applauds Portsmouth for Becoming First NH Community to Opt Out of Casinos

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Portsmouth, NH – November 12, 2025

Granite Staters for Responsible Gaming today praised the City of Portsmouth for becoming the first municipality in New Hampshire to officially opt out of allowing casinos within its borders. The citywide vote of 4,092 to 1,707 marks a landmark moment for local control in the ongoing debate over casino expansion in the Granite State.

Mayor Deaglan McEachern voiced clear support for opting out, emphasizing that casinos do not align with Portsmouth’s priorities or character. As he told the Portsmouth Herald, “Maybe there’s some places in the state looking to have this, it’s not something we need in Portsmouth… And I’m not supportive of (casinos)… it’s not what we’re focused on as a city. It’s just not something I think Portsmouth will support.”

Under New Hampshire’s recently updated gaming laws, municipalities have the right to decide whether to allow casinos or other forms of expanded gambling. Portsmouth’s early and decisive move underscores a growing recognition that while gaming revenue may appeal to some, the social and economic costs often outweigh the benefits.

Granite Staters for Responsible Gaming advocates for responsible gambling policies, community education, and local empowerment in decisions about gaming expansion. The organization encourages other municipalities to follow Portsmouth’s lead and carefully consider the long-term implications before allowing casinos in their communities.
